Two Detroit youth programs vie for $500,000 grants from Lewis Prize for Music

“A pair of Detroit groups are in the running for some generous financial support heading into the new year.

Mosaic Youth Theatre and We Are Culture Creators are among eight national finalists named Wednesday for the second annual Lewis Prize for Music Accelerator Awards, established to boost youth access to music education.

Three winning organizations, to be announced Jan. 12, will each be awarded $500,000 in multiyear funding. The other five finalists will receive grants of $50,000 or $25,000, with $1.75 million total to be distributed.

The Lewis Prize for Music was founded in 2018 by philanthropist Daniel Lewis, focusing on low-income and marginalized communities, maintaining that "young people with access to high-quality music learning, performance and creation opportunities will mature into thriving individuals," as the organization says in a statement.”
