Stax, Memphis Music Initiative receive COVID-related national grants

The Stax Music Academy and the Memphis Music Initiative (MMI) were each awarded $50,000 grants from the Lewis Prize for Music.

Stax and MMI were two of 32 organizations across the country to receive grants.

“The Lewis Prize for Music was established to nurture youth through exposure to music education, performances, and creative opportunities.

The grants are part of the organization's $1.25 million COVID-19 Community Response Fund. Locally, the funds will be used to continue Stax's and MMI's virtual programming.

“This Lewis Music Prize grant to two Memphis organizations is further evidence that our city is not only steeped in musical past no other city can claim but also proves that we continue working into the future by preparing new generations of young people to join the music industry and carry this flame forward," Stax Music Academy executive director Pat Mitchell Worley said in a statement. "This recognition of our work only strengthens our resolve to continue making meaningful, impactful change at a time when the world is facing many challenges.””
