Philly youth music program makes short list for $500k national award

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A Philadelpia youth music program is one note closer to a half-million dollars, which will help them continue their mission of deterring one of the city's most pressing problems — gun violence.

The Lewis Prize for Music is a national award for organizations that are impacting systemic change through musical education. Nearly 200 organizations applied this year and Beyond the Bars, a Philadelphia organization, is a top three finalist.

Executive director Matthew Kerr said their ability to pivot programming quickly during the pandemic is what helped them stand out.
